# Voice design vs voice cloning for a voice of your own

Voice cloning copies a person from recordings; voice design makes a voice from a written description. What each needs, when each fits, consent, and what a design costs.

A voice that is not in any catalog can come from two places. Voice cloning copies a real person's voice from recordings of them speaking. Voice design makes a voice from a written description, with no recording at all.

Every vendor fact below links that vendor's own page, as we read it in October 2026.

## The difference at a glance

| | Voice cloning | Voice design |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Starts from | Recordings of one person speaking | A sentence or two about the voice |
| Needs | Clean audio and the speaker's consent | Nothing to record |
| Gives you | A voice that sounds like that person | A voice that fits the description |
| To change it | Record again | Describe the change |

## When cloning fits

Clone when the voice has to be one particular person's: your own voice on your own channel, or a narrator who has agreed to lend theirs. The clone is only as good as the recording behind it.

[Fish Audio's cloning docs](https://docs.fish.audio/features/voice-cloning) ask for at least 10 seconds per clip and say a minute or two of clear, single-speaker speech improves fidelity. [ElevenLabs](https://elevenlabs.io/docs/overview/capabilities/voices) describes Instant Voice Cloning from samples under two minutes, and Professional Voice Cloning trained on extended audio. [Inworld's comparison guide](https://inworld.ai/resources/voice-design-vs-voice-cloning) puts its instant method at five to 15 seconds of authorized audio and its professional method, in preview, at ten minutes or more.

## When design fits

Design when the voice does not need to sound like anyone in particular: a game character, a narrator for a faceless channel, a brand voice, a bedtime storyteller. [Inworld's guide](https://inworld.ai/resources/voice-design-vs-voice-cloning) makes design the default when resemblance to a person is unnecessary.

Design also gives you a voice of your own without recording one. In [Paxa's Voice design tool](https://paxalabs.com/app/voice-design), you describe the voice in English, Thai, or Chinese, hear its first line, and change it in words until it fits. A saved voice gets an id for the API, and an account keeps 1 on the free plan and up to 50 on the largest. [How to describe a voice](https://paxalabs.com/guides/how-to-describe-a-voice-for-ai) covers what to write.

## Consent and impersonation

A clone copies a real person. It starts with their permission. [Inworld's guide](https://inworld.ai/resources/voice-design-vs-voice-cloning) says consent should be explicit, documented, and scoped to languages, channels, use cases, duration, and storage.

Design needs no recording, but a description can still aim at a person. [OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/custom-voices) keeps named people out of voice prompts, and [Fish Audio](https://fish.audio/blog/voice-design/) asks for a no-impersonation confirmation before each designed voice is saved. In Paxa, a description that names a real person gets an original voice under an invented name, and impersonating anyone is against [the rules every account accepts](https://paxalabs.com/responsible-ai).

## What a design costs

Vendors charge for a design in different ways. [ElevenLabs](https://elevenlabs.io/docs/creative-platform/voices/voice-design) charges the preview text's characters once per generation, though three previews come back. [Fish Audio's API](https://docs.fish.audio/developer-guide/models-pricing/pricing-and-rate-limits) charges $0.01 per successful request, whatever the number of candidates. [MiniMax](https://platform.minimax.io/docs/guides/pricing) charges $3 per designed voice, on its first use for speech.

Paxa charges 5 credits for each design or change, its first line included. Speech in a saved voice costs 1.25 times the rate of a catalog voice, and [the pricing page](https://paxalabs.com/pricing) lists that rate.

## Common questions

### Is voice design the same as voice cloning?

No. Cloning copies a real person's voice from recordings of them. Design makes a voice from a written description and needs no recording.

### Can I make an AI voice of my own without recording?

Yes, with voice design. Describe the voice you want, refine it in words, and save it. It sounds the way your description says.

### Does Paxa offer voice cloning?

No. Paxa accepts no reference audio. Voices come from the catalog or are designed from a description.

### Can I use a designed voice commercially?

The free credits on a new Paxa account are for personal use and evaluation. Buy any plan or credit pack, and the account's audio is yours to use commercially, including audio made before the purchase. [The Terms](https://paxalabs.com/terms#content-and-output) state the rule.
