Phasa Lu
A Thai language game with one syllable in and two syllables out. The tone of the original survives the change, which is the part machines get wrong.

The opening line reads คิดถึง รักนะ in standard Thai. The box takes up to 50 characters and speaks in 2 voices. Type Phasa Lu, standard Thai, or English.
How Phasa Lu is built#
Work one syllable at a time. Every syllable of standard Thai comes back as a pair, and the two halves are written together.
First syllable
The onset becomes ล. The vowel, the final consonant, and the tone stay where they were.
Second syllable
The onset stays. The vowel becomes สระอู when the source vowel was long and สระอุ when it was short. The final consonant and the tone come across again.
The tone is the invariant. Both halves carry the tone the source syllable had, and the spelling shifts to hold it.
A leading ห appears whenever that tone is rising or low, because ล on its own cannot write those two. Guides that copy the tone mark across land on a different tone, which is where most published tables go wrong.
01
An ordinary syllable
ล opens the pair and สระอู closes it, at the length the source vowel had.
- กิน
- ลินกุน Mid tone
- สาม
- หลามสูม Rising tone
02
An onset that is already ร or ล
ซ stands in for ล, which would otherwise rebuild the word the pair came from. It belongs to the same consonant class, and the tone mark carries across untouched.
- รัก
- ซักรุก High tone
- ลอง
- ซองลูง Mid tone
03
A vowel that is already อุ or อู
The second syllable takes สระอี or สระอิ, keeping the length. Some speakers use สระแอ for the same reason.
- มุก
- ลุกมิก High tone
- ขูด
- หลูดขีด Low tone
04
Both at once
ซ leads the pair and สระอี or สระอิ fills the second half.
- รู้
- ซู้รี้ High tone
- รุม
- ซุมริม Mid tone
The name obeys the rule. ภาษาลู comes back as ลาภู หลาษู ซูลี, its last syllable falling under the fourth case.

Where it comes from#
Phasa Lu is spoken in Thai LGBTQ+ circles, and kathoey speakers carried it furthest. It reached television, music, and the wider internet, and a listener who has never studied it can still hear the shape of a word underneath.
The origin is undocumented. Thai explainers report two accounts, one placing it in prison slang and one in teenage wordplay, and neither carries evidence. The pattern itself is what every account agrees on.
Why it is hard to read aloud#
Every Phasa Lu syllable is well-formed Thai that no dictionary lists. หละสุ, หลัดหวุด, and ลีดู follow the spelling rules exactly and mean nothing on their own.
Thai writes no spaces between words. A system that finds word boundaries by looking words up has nothing to look up in a Phasa Lu line, and the boundaries it guesses fall in the wrong places. Reading the line correctly means going back to the letters: consonant class, vowel length, final consonant, tone mark.
- Voicing the leading ห, which is silent and only sets the tone.
- Splitting the pair in the wrong place, because no word in the line can be looked up.
- Borrowing the tone of a word that looks similar, which flattens the pair the game depends on.

Questions#
- What is Phasa Lu?
- Phasa Lu is a Thai language game that splits every syllable into a pair. The first half takes ล as its onset, the second half keeps the original onset over สระอู, and both halves carry the tone the syllable already had.
- How do you speak Phasa Lu?
- Take one syllable. Say it again with ล in front of the same vowel and final, then say the original consonant with สระอู and the same final. คิดถึง รักนะ comes back as ลิดคุด หลึงถุง ซักรุก ละนุ.
- Why does ร or ล turn into ซ?
- A first half beginning in ล would rebuild the syllable it came from, and the pair would stop being a disguise. ซ belongs to the same consonant class as ร and ล, which keeps the tone mark working unchanged.
- Where did Phasa Lu come from?
- No account is documented. Thai explainers name prison slang and teenage wordplay, and evidence neither. What is settled is the pattern and the community that carried it.
- Is Phasa Lu the same as kham phuan?
- คำผวน swaps the rhymes of two syllables and hands back two words. Phasa Lu works inside a single syllable and hands back a pair. They are different games with different results.
- Can a text to speech model read Phasa Lu?
- It depends on how the model reads Thai. A Phasa Lu line is spelled correctly and listed nowhere, and a reader that leans on a word list mis-splits it. Paxa Flash reads Thai from the letters, which is the same path a Thai reader takes through a word they have never seen.
- Can I hear Phasa Lu here?
- Yes. The box at the top of this page speaks any line up to 50 characters with no account and no card, in 2 of the 26 voices.
