Thai voices that read the English inside the sentence

An ordinary Thai sentence carries English in three spellings. The Thai voices read all three in the same breath, which is what a product line, an ad, or a support script needs.

Thai copy is rarely all Thai. The menu item is Settings, the button says Sync, the customer scans a QR, and the word for cloud is spelled คลาวด์. A sentence like that is normal Thai, and a voice that stops at each switch is not.

Every Thai voice in the catalog reads a mixed line as one sentence. Latin-script words are read as English, Thai-spelled loanwords as the Thai words they have become, and initialisms letter by letter. The line below carries all three.

Three spellings of English#

Each one appears in the shared line, and each is read a different way.

An ordinary Thai sentence carries English in three spellings, and a voice has to read each one as what it is.

The same word can appear twice in two spellings. Sync on the button and ซิงก์ in the sentence are one word, read two ways, and both are right.

Writing the line#

Three habits that decide how the mixed line sounds.

    Spell the brand as its owner does

    Capitalization is part of the spelling the voice reads. Type a product name as its owner writes it.

    Use the Thai spelling where Thai has one

    คลาวด์ reads as the Thai word it is. The Latin spelling of the same word reads as English, and inside a Thai sentence the Thai spelling usually sounds right.

  3. 03

    Give a whole English sentence an English voice

    A Thai voice carries English words inside Thai. When the whole line is English, pick one of the English voices, which were cast for that.

Questions#

Do I need to mark where the English starts?
No. The script itself is the marker. Latin letters read as English and Thai letters as Thai, in one request with no tags.
How are initialisms read?
Letter by letter, as a Thai speaker says them. An initialism the voice should say as a word can be spelled the way it sounds.
Does it cost more to mix languages?
No. Speech bills per character at one rate, and a Latin letter and a Thai letter count the same.
Will an English voice read a mixed line?
It reads the Thai with an English accent, which is why the catalog groups voices by language. Use a Thai voice for Thai with English inside, and an English voice for a line that is English throughout.
