Reading a Thai receipt
The document that records money already taken, and the one most likely to reach you as a phone photograph.
ใบเสร็จรับเงิน records a payment received. It is issued after the money moves, which is what separates it from an invoice asking for money and from a tax invoice documenting VAT.
It is also the document that arrives in the worst condition. Receipts are small, folded, printed on thermal paper that fades, and photographed at an angle on a desk, and every one of those is a reading problem before the language is.

This list is the shape practice uses. Small shops print far less than this and large ones print more, which is the argument for reading whatever is on the page and matching afterwards.
Why this one is hard to read#
- It arrives as a photograph
- Receipts reach a system as phone pictures more often than as clean scans. Skew, fold lines, and thermal fade all land on the reader before any Thai does.
- The signature block is not text
- A handwritten name over a printed line is a figure sitting where a value belongs. It has to be recognised as a block without being read as a word.
- The amount appears three times
- Digits in the table, digits in the total, and Thai words underneath. A reader that returns two of the three leaves the caller unable to check its work.
From blocks to fields#
Reading the amount in words is what makes a receipt checkable. Compare the spelled-out total against the digits and you have an internal check no field-extraction confidence score gives you, because the document carries its own second copy of the number.

Questions#
- Can it read a photograph of a receipt?
- It reads PNG, JPEG and WebP as one page each, alongside PDF. A photograph taken square and in focus reads better than one taken at an angle, which is true of every reader.
- What is the difference from ใบกำกับภาษี?
- A receipt records money received. A tax invoice documents VAT on a sale and carries the eight particulars section 86/4 fixes. Many Thai businesses print one sheet that serves as both, titled ใบเสร็จรับเงิน/ใบกำกับภาษี.
- Does the signature come back?
- The block comes back as a figure in the reading order it occupies. The handwriting inside it is treated as an image, and no attempt is made to spell a signature into words.
