Isan Thai
Two voices carry this register today, one female and one male, each reading with the cadence of the Northeast.
What marks it#
Isan is the everyday speech of Thailand's Northeast. It is what people use at home, at the market, and with anyone from the same province, and a Central Thai read of the same words carries a distance this register closes.
The clearest marker in these clips is เด้อ. Som Tam opens and closes on it, Larb closes on เด้อครับ, and the particle appears nowhere in the Central Thai sample lines. Larb also opens on เป็นจั่งใด๋น้อ, which is a greeting the Central cast never reaches for.
Both voices read any Thai text you send. The accent belongs to the voice. A Central Thai sentence comes back in the Northeastern register, which is what the shared-sentence board on the accents page demonstrates.

Cast it for#
- Public messaging in the Northeast
- Announcements, agricultural notices, and government communication for the region.
- Local service lines
- Hotline prompts and queue messages for callers who speak this way at home.
- Community and food media
- Regional channels, market video, and community reporting.
When Central Thai is the better pick
National copy usually wants Central Thai, which every region hears as neutral. A regional register is a choice about audience, and using it on material meant for the whole country narrows who it speaks to.
Questions#
- How many Isan voices are there?
- Two. Som Tam reads the register in a female voice and Larb in a male one, which is what a dialogue or an alternating announcement needs.
- Does the accent survive Central Thai text?
- Yes. The accent is a property of the voice, and the accents page plays one shared Central Thai sentence read by every regional voice beside a Central control.
- When is Central Thai the better choice?
- For copy aimed at the whole country, and for formal material where a regional register would read as a choice about the audience.
