What marks it#
Northern Thai is the speech of the old Lanna region, heard around Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, and their neighbours. The cadence is softer and slower than Central Thai, and the difference is audible in the first two words of a greeting.
The marker in this clip is เจ้า. Khao Soi opens on สวัสดีเจ้า and closes on เน่อเจ้า, and neither ending appears in the Central Thai sample lines.
